Be Seen. Be Heard: A Middle School Diversity Conference is in its second year. Established to give students in grades 6-8 a place where they can dialogue and learn about the important issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, this innovative and interactive program will help students to deepen knowledge of themselves and others while learning to be allies and taking a stand against bullying. Students will also have the opportunity, in an age appropriate way, to begin to make sense of some of the issues of diversity they are seeing in the national media. The student conference will be led by a team of experienced educators and facilitators from St. Andrew's and other independent schools.
While the students are working together with their conference facilitators, chaperones and other adult educators and administrators are invited to participate in a concurrent professional development workshop entitled, "Educating and Leading in a Changing Climate." Led by faculty from The National Diversity Practitioners Institute (www.diversitypractitioners.org), this workshop will provide space for dialogue, shared experience, and practical tools to help educators and administrators navigate diversity work in our schools.
This conference is sponsored and hosted by The Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Potomac, MD. We hope that your school will join us!
