Upper School students take at least one trimester-long foundation course in the visual
arts as freshman, and must take a minimum of three additional trimester-long
art classes in either visual or performing arts for the balance of their Upper
School career. Students may choose
to explore a variety of art forms through our survey level course, and may also
pursue more focused and challenging instruction in any of our advanced level 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional and
digital media courses in that deal with drawing, painting, ceramics, photography,
video, computer graphics, yearbook, and more.
e-Portfolios
All students create digital
e-portfolios to record their growth and progress as artists during their time
at St. Andrew’s. Any interested student as well as
advanced level art students including all AP Studio Art students create and
publish web galleries of their visual art portfolios.
Print and Digital Publications –
St. Andrew’s publishes a literary magazine, a newspaper, and
a yearbook. In addition to
literary submissions, these publications feature the original artwork and
photography of students. Students
take the lead in designing and producing all school publications, and all students are invited to submit images of their artistic creations for publication.
Spring Arts Celebrations –
Each spring, St. Andrew’s Postoak campus celebrates the
visual arts with a week-long art show and competition. Students are invited to enter
original work in the areas of drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture,
photography, video, and digital graphics.
A panel of expert judges organized by the St. Andrew"s Parent Association Cultural Arts Committee reviews the entries in each category, and
recognition is given for top honors through the Judges’ Choice Awards.
Kreeger Gallery
– A professional-quality gallery is
located at the entrance to MacDonald Hall on the Postoak campus in which
original student artwork and photography, as well as alumni and professional
artists’ works, are showcased during the school year. Student artwork and photography are also featured in the
school library as well as in display cases, offices, and hallways throughout
the school buildings, and students routinely submit and place in local
competitions and exhibits.
e-Portfolios Many students create digital
e-portfolios to record their growth and progress as artists during their time
at St. Andrew’s. Any interested student as well as
advanced level art students including all AP Studio Art students create and
publish web galleries of their visual art portfolios.

Independent Art –
Serious art students who have completed any advanced level
art course may submit a proposal for independent study in the visual arts, and
if accepted, can work in the medium of their choice to develop their art
portfolio.
Advanced Placement Studio Art –
This course makes it possible for Upper School students to
do college-level work. Students
submit drawing portfolio (which may include painting and other wet media), 2-D
design or 3-D portfolios of work for evaluation by the College Board at the end
of the year, and a separate grade for the course.
